Women’s basketball team wins third conference championship
For the third year in a row, the Foothill College Women’s Basketball Team was named conference champions! Lead by head coach Jody Craig, the Owls defeated Mission College, 76-42, in mid-February to clinch the Coast Conference Championship.
In a game to determine first place, every team member scored for the Owls and they were led by sophomores, Akilah Jennings with 21 points, Lira Ndifon with 12, Tyiteyana Jefferson and Essence Johnson with 10 each.
"We are excited about our performance this season," said Craig. "These girls have worked extremely hard and have grown tremendously as a group. I believe we are playing our best game and I am proud to say we are the number one defensive team in the state. We are ready for the playoffs!"
Much of the team’s success can be contributed to Craig, now in her nineteenth season as head coach. She has lead the Owls to 15 conference titles and two appearances in the state finals. After a brief hiatus, she returned to Foothill in 2014 and has guided the team to the conference championship ever since.
Due to their regular season dominance, the team had a first-round bye and took on Chabot College at home in the second round, 77-47. The game was never close with the Owls up by 24 at the halftime. The win earned the team a sport in the Nor Cal Regional Final versus number-one seed Sierra College.
The Owls were on a roll and couldn't be stopped. They upset Sierra by a final score of 51-45, propelling the team into the Elite 8 at the state championships. The win was a team effort as every single player on the Foothill roster scored. The last time the team made an appearance in the Elite 8 was 2012, when they went on to win the entire tournament.
Foothill entered the Elite 8 against top-ranked Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) on Friday, March 10. The Owls jumped to an early six-point lead, but couldn't hold on to their 14-game winning streak, losing to Mt. SAC, 58-46. Down by as many as 20 points, 44-24, near the end of the third period, the Owls mounted a fourth-quarter comeback, closing to 48-38 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Tiffani lowe and Akilah Jennings. Lowe hit two more baskets, including a three, to close the gap to seven at 50-43 with 4:40 left.
"It was a tough loss, but the team played so well the entire season," said Athletic Director Mike Teijeiro. "We will be back again next year and look forward to returning to the state tournament!"
